Before the Verathren Incident
Tierchra used to be a peaceful land … well, as peaceful as a place can be when it is home to humans, elves, dwarves, and dragons. For generations, people disagreed with each other on how to interact with the dragons that are native to the land. Those who believed that dragons should be respected called themselves Tamers, and those who believed that dragons should be destroyed called themselves Slayers. The Tamers and the Slayers have always had problems with each other – petty skirmishes, back-and-forth attacks that spilled moderate amounts of blood – but things are different now.
The Verathren Incident – 1535
Mt. Verathren, the tallest peak in all of Tierchra, was home to the largest colony of silver dragons in the entire kingdom. It was a place venerated by Tamers and dragons alike. Close to the heavens, home to some of the wisest and oldest creatures in the land … Mt. Verathren was sacred. So, when a band of Slayers laid siege to the peak and slaughtered countless silver dragons, outrage burned like wildfire throughout the Tierchran population. Gold and bronze dragons, followed by Tamers, converged on the mountain to take down the treacherous Slayers. The battle was long and arduous, and much innocent blood was spilled. There were only two survivors: one human child and one silver dragon.
Now – 1547
The echoes of the Verathren Incident are still widely felt throughout all of Tierchra. Ever since that fateful day, tensions between Tamers and Slayers have been escalated to the point of war. Seampany and Trodai, once peaceful villages, are now the subjects of near-constant battles. Hardly a day goes by without the desecration of honorific art, either by Tamers or by Slayers. And in Astor, the human capital city, the Imperial King has betrayed the most sacred of his duties: the maintenance of neutrality. For the first time in Tierchran history, the Imperial King has fired his Tamer advisors, employing only Slayers and attempting to turn their philosophy into official doctrine.
The Slayers have the political power, and the Tamers have only their passionate ideology. What will be the fate of this great land and its native dragons? At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.
